Chapter Twenty-Five

Will stopped talking, and Howard, Edward and Mimi all turned towards me, shock on their faces.

‘What on earth are you talking about, Grace?’ Edward said eventually. ‘I mean, it’s been a hard day for all of us. But really.’ His eyes were hard.

‘I’m directly descended from Beatrice, Archie’s daughter,’ I said. ‘Her son Jacob was my great grandad. And although there’s been an almighty cover-up of this information, I’ve still found it out. I’m very sorry if any of you are disappointed by this revelation, but it’s true, so there we are.’ I purposefully didn’t mention that Alexandra had told me about it, or anything about her having the certificates, as her killer could be any one of them, and I was becoming aware that I’d probably played too much of my hand already.

There was a pause, while the four of them tried to make sense of my words.

At that moment, I saw Jesse – carrying a large spade on his back – walking across the grass about two hundred metres away.

‘I’m so sorry,’ I said to them. ‘Do excuse me, but there’s something I need to do.’ I couldn’t take in the revelation about Alexandra’s will. That would have to wait for later. Sorting out what to do about the awful note left in my room took priority.

Seconds later, I’d caught up with Jesse.

‘Grace,’ he said. He caught sight of my face. ‘Shit, what’s happened now? Are you all right?’ He looked over at the castle.

‘No, not really,’ I said. I was aware that the four of them – Edward, Mimi, Howard and Will – would be watching our every move. Wondering about my strange behaviour – unless it was one of them who wrote the note… Oh look, I thought, a movement catching my eye. There’s Helena too, walking over the grass to join the merry throng… The whole lot of them give me the creeps. ‘Ah, is there somewhere private that we could go to talk? I’ve got something to show you.’

‘Yep, no problem,’ Jesse said. ‘Come with me.’

Ten minutes later, we were both in his mud-splattered Land Rover, turning out of the estate’s long drive, and right onto a country lane.

‘Where are we going?’ I said.

‘To a nice little pub I know,’ Jesse said, looking over at me. ‘You look as though you could do with a drink, Grace. And it will do you good to get out of that place for a while. I always start feeling like I’m going mad if I stay there for too long with no break. And if you’ve got some important things to say, then the further we are away from Godwyne the better. Walls have ears in that place.’

‘Good,’ I said, feeling weak. ‘Yes, I could do with a drink or two, if I’m honest. My head’s spinning, Jesse. So much has happened, and it’s hard to take it all in.’

For the tenth time since getting into the car, I bent down and checked that I had my travel bag – containing my precious laptop – and handbag with me.
